Fresh Press: Two in the Times

Two C&G exhibition projects were featured this week in the New York Times: Emma Lazarus: Poet of Exiles and John Adams Unbound. The Emma Lazarus project opened recently at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York and was reviewed by Edward Rothstein. The image below appeared with the piece.

The John Adams project is the traveling panel version of a larger show at the Boston Public Library, both designed by the firm. It was reviewed by the Times when it arrived at a venue on Long Island as part of its long countrywide tour. The image below appeared with that article.

Fresh Project: Appalachia Map-Guide

Recently the Appalachian Regional Commission and American Heritage Publishing marked the launch of the CGP-designed, “Civil War: The Home Front Map-Guide to Appalachia.” The map-guide was released in conjunction with the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. It was created as a tool to help the 13 regional states leverage the growing popularity of cultural heritage tourism.

The guide was designed to be an insert in American Heritage magazine, and it is distributed by tourism agencies in West Virginia and the 12 other Appalachian states (Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, Ohio,Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Tennessee).

Fresh Project: RFE/RL in Prague

C&G Partners has completed another project through the U.S. Broadcasting Board of Governors: a monumental sign for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty’s new headquarters in Prague. The facility is located on a busy street filled with cars and trolleys. The new main signage is large (because of the speed at which it must be read), angled (because of the oblique directions of approach) and built in two materials and two colors to separate the two languages.

The 10-foot-high, custom-drawn, dimensional letterforms create a sculptural installation that changes language depending on direction of approach, either “LIBERTY” or the same word with the same amount of letters in Czech, “SVOBODA.” LIBERTY is opaque colored glass; SVOBODA is stainless steel. Each letter pair intersects on a central vertical axis; the shapes required intensive engineering to create the minimal, graceful final result.

Words were selected as the theme of the installation because of the urgent nature of the news broadcasting done inside, which is often sent by shortwave radio to countries with limited freedom of the press.

Senior designer Mariano Desmaras, from the article: “As the exhibit designers, our challenge was the strike a balance between the works of art, many of which are masterpieces, and the story of the people and the historical context behind them.”

The online interactive, part of an article reviewing the re-opened museum, opens with a shot capturing the introductory panels for the exhibits, “Voces y Visiones” and “Nexus New York.”

Sneak Peek: Panamanian Passages

This Saturday, October 17 marks the opening of a new exhibit at the Smithsonian Latino Center in Washington, DC. The exhibit, titled “Panamanian Passages,” is a bilingual installation focusing on pivotal points in Panamanian history. The exhibit documents the isthmus’ 3 million-year-old origins to the social-political developments going on today.

The firm’s exhibit designs draw on the unique geography and ecology of the place and reference the vibrancy of the country and its inhabitants through bold colors. A series of graphic panels feature the people themselves in a series of silhouettes, representing the Panamanian population seen throughout history, from its indigenous roots to those moving the country into the 21st Century.

This is the second Latin-American exhibit program created by the firm to open this week. This is also the second Smithsonian exhibit that the firm has worked on, the first being the Star-Spangled Banner, which you can read about here.
