C&G Partners designed a visual brand, exhibit and interactives for a new initiative of JPMorgan Chase & Co., in conjunction with The King Center in Atlanta. The King Center Imaging Project will digitize tens of thousands of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s inspirational and historic documents for public use.

The firm’s touring exhibit allows visitors to study and interact with Dr. King’s documents in high resolution and experience first-hand the process of digitization used in the lab.

The project includes interactive stations featuring four of Dr. King’s most famous written works: the “I Have a Dream” speech, the “Letter from Birmingham Jail”, his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech, and the “Drum Major Instinct” sermon. The documents come alive with multimedia annotations, asides, images and videos.

Exhibit visitors can write their own dream, have it scanned, and add it to wall with hundreds more. Visitors start by writing their hopes on a special “My Dream Is” card. (In the first image below, exhibit guests Martin Luther King III and his wife Arndrea write their own dream for the future.)

The card is digitally captured using the same technology used for the digitization of the entire King collection.

The digital image is saved and permanently archived into the King Center collection.

Finally, visitors physically post their card on the Dream Wall where it joins hundreds more.

The exhibit includes drawers full of high-resolution, annotated document reproductions for visitors to hold and examine; a video about the digitization project; and custom-colored computer stations.

One terminal allows visitors to listen to complete audio recordings of Dr. King’s most famous speeches, watch complete historic footage of the pivotal “I Have a Dream” speech, and explore The King Center’s current website.

C&G Partners also created the visual brand for the The King Center Imaging Project itself, the exhibit staff livery, takeaways and other items.

The modular, reconfigurable exhibit was launched at the dedication of the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial in Washington DC, and will travel to the Congressional Black Caucus, The King Center in Atlanta, Chase headquarters in New York City, and many other venues.

C&G Partners was honored to do the concept, exhibit, graphic and interactive design for the project. The video was edited by our frequent collaborators Russell Brosnahan Haffner Multimedia, Inc. The exhibit was built and installed by Art Guild, Inc. C&G Partners is currently working on a complete new website for the King Center and the King Center Imaging Project, which will debut in 2012.

The firm’s recent client, Peace Dividend Trust, whose Marketplace Recovery Project helps post-conflict countries recover economically by supporting the purchasing of local goods and services, is making expedited efforts in response to Haiti’s devastating earthquake. PDT, who had recently sent a team to initiate the project in Haiti, reached out to Emanuela Frigerio yesterday, requesting graphic design for this purpose.

As the originators of the Marketplace Recovery Project’s logo, C&G Partners donated “Build Local. Build Haiti.” lock-ups, in both French/Creole and English/Creole, and versions with and without web addresses, all executed quickly in order to get these graphics available as soon as possible.

Peace Dividend Trust has also put up a temporary web portal just for their Haitian mission, and you can read more about the developing program in Haiti here. Other designers and design organizations, such as AIGA, are encouraging support for Haiti’s recovery as well.

Building Markets, part of Peace Dividend Trust’s economic recovery efforts, has implemented their “Buy Local” logo with great success in the field, most recently in Timor-Leste.

The logo, which is designed to reflect restorative economic growth that occurs when a developing country buys goods and services locally, has been applied in several incarnations, such as office, street cart and ferry signage.

These application methods are indicative of the logo’s success facilitated by its simplicity; it lends itself to digital media reproductions as well as old style application techniques such as stencil painting.

Designed by partner Emanuela Frigerio, the logo has also been part of initiatives in Afghanistan and Haiti.

Under Consideration posted an inspirational article by Partner Steff Geissbuhler in the “Brand New” section today. The editorial strays from the typical material covered on that website – mainly, new identity work – and instead describes Steff’s experience watching his brand identity for MercyCorps evolve over time. In the field, the logo has often been executed roughly and quickly, sometimes by hand and from memory, with the simplest materials. For other institutions, that would be bad news. But not in this case: here, it is a perfect match for the mission and purpose of the organization.

The newly published book, Unimark International: The Design of Business and the Business of Design by Jan Conradi, will be released this coming Wednesday, December 9th at The Type Directors Club. Unimark, a firm that shaped the design era in the 1960′s and 70′s and whose influence still resonates today, has a personal connection with the firm via a memorable interview that took place in June 2004. When Jan was traveling Europe in research for this book, partner Emanuela Frigerio set up an interview for her to take place in Milan. Emanuela acted as translator for this sit down with former Unimark Milan designers, including Franco Gaffuri, Emanuela’s former employer.

At his offices in Milan, Gaffuri brought in Emilio Fioravanti (G&R Associati) and Cristiano Sironi (Sironi GD&P) for the interview and discussed their days at Unimark when Massimo Vignelli and Bob Noorda were working there.

This and similar discussions on the history of this monumental firm and its design legacies are found in the book. Find out details on Wednesday’s book signing event here.
