Tonight on PBS: Helvetica, the eye-opening documentary by Gary Hustwit and cinematographer Luke Geissbuhler (son of partner Steff Geissbuhler), about the typeface of the same name. Luke is not only family, he has also been behind the camera for some of our projects. Check your local listings and learn more here.

Just in time for the holidays, surfing enthusiast and partner Keith Helmetag has a new surfboard of his own design, a 9 ft, 9 in David Nuuhiwa Noserider, fresh out of the glassing bay at Joel Tudor Surfboards. Keith designed the board as a nod to the color-band series of late artist Sol Lewitt.

Fresh Project: Kress Foundation

Yesterday, C&G Partners launched a new website, a new visual brand, and new print collateral for the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, a leading US organization in the advancement of the history, conservation, and enjoyment of European art, architecture, and archaeology from antiquity to the 19th Century. Here are some images from the branding, print and web projects, which use beautiful images and stories of the Kress collection itself to make the user experience memorable.

The new logotype. The elegant shape of the “K” was inspired by a decorative architectural detail from an S.H. Kress & Co. Art Deco building.

The stationery system features a collage of three different “punch marks,” which are decorative patterns that are embedded into a painting’s gilded surfaces:

The new home page at www.kressfoundation.org features a panoramic vignette that changes with every visit. Or users can manually browse by clicking the “more” bar on the right:

Fresh Award: NYU Timeline exhibit honored by AIGA

The firm’s New York University Timeline exhibition is honored in this year’s 365: AIGA Annual Design Competition for excellence in information design. An exhibit at AIGA featuring the NYU project opens to the public today at the AIGA National Design Center (through 20 Feb 2009 at 164 Fifth Avenue, New York, M-Th 11-6, Fr 11-5). The design team for the NYU Timeline was led by partner Emanuela Frigerio.

The White House has just released this image of the President touring the Star-Spangled Banner exhibit at the National Museum of American History during the dedication ceremony. (Unofficial rumor has it that he stayed longer in the exhibit than planned.)

The last half of the piece (1:25 mark) is an extended tour of the “heart of the museum”, the Star-Spangled Banner exhibit. For an article called “Wall Street Under Glass,” the New York Times has just released this photograph of the Money exhibit at the Museum of American Finance on Wall Street, a project designed by C&G Partners that opened in January 2008.

CBS has just posted a piece on YouTube on the re-opening of the National Museum of American History, with special emphasis on, and footage of, the Star-Spangled Banner exhibit. The report covers the viewing chamber, the exhibits, the audio-visual pieces, and the interactive table. There is also some behind-the-scenes footage of museum staff inside the chamber examining the flag itself. The segment on the SSB begins at the :50 mark (total length 2:22).
