Founded in 1949, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty promotes democracy in parts of the world where human rights violations, war and state-controlled media are routine. RFE/RL asked for a new visual brand that would convey the ideal of freedom through a single graphic that could be embraced by all cultures across 28 different languages. The final symbol, a forward-leaning torch whose flames rise to become a bird in flight, embodies the spirit of the organization, and orange was chosen as the most inviting and least globally controversial color. The new logo is used for equipment, facilities, print, television, web, and signs around the world.
