C&G Partners was commissioned to design a new visual identity and website for the Robert Lehman Foundation, the celebrated organization in support of the arts. The program was crafted to highlight its role in fostering the appreciation, knowledge, and enjoyment of the visual arts and their impact on culture. The new system showcases the rich history of the Robert Lehman Collection and illuminates the Foundation’s ongoing support for exhibitions, art education, lectures, and capital projects.

The new logo, inspired by Giovanni di Paolo’s The Creation of the World and the Expulsion from Paradise from the collection, sets a sophisticated tone with a color palette derived directly from the artwork.

The website’s design incorporates a depth of content, visual delight, and attention to detail that evokes the Collection itself. It features an engaging presentation of the Collection’s history and its journey to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, reflecting Robert Lehman’s vision while bringing it to life in a digital and contemporary context.

The interface design echoes visual elements that distinguish this unique collection through its cohesive and harmonious color palette and distinctive features, such as its special collection of nearly four hundred frames, regarded as one of the finest in the world. Here, the frames stand in for the traditional images of staff that you might expect.

Throughout the development of the website’s visual language, we found inspiration in upholding the Lehmans’ distinctive preferences for harmony and richness across diverse periods and styles.

Excerpts of painterly details from the collection itself become colorful design elements at the top of each page of the site.

Through these enhancements, the Robert Lehman Foundation’s new identity and website become a dynamic resource, complementing the Collection’s strengths while supporting new scholarship and fostering a deeper public engagement with the visual arts.
