“Path of Liberty: That Which Unites US” is an immersive outdoor nighttime art installation created by C&G Partners in partnership with artist and filmmaker Daniella Vale, commissioned by the Soloviev Foundation for Freedom Plaza. Spanning more than six acres in the heart of Manhattan, the exhibition celebrates the upcoming 250th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 2026, and invites visitors on a journey through the complex and evolving ideals of liberty, freedom, and democracy in the United States today.
Vale traveled across the country to capture firsthand portraits and testimonials of people from all walks of life. Their reflections and testimonials are presented on towering 16-foot-tall scaffolding structures—a visual metaphor for the ongoing experiment of American democracy. Accompanying their portraits are personal stories and an original score composed for the installation, bringing each individual’s perspective to life. At the heart of the site, a central plaza, framed by eight large-scale projections, is the emotional core of the exhibition. The multiple voices and landscapes featured throughout the installation are brought together into a powerful multi-screen film experience, offering visitors a chance to pause and providing space for shared reflection.
Designed to be experienced at night, the installation is both monumental and immersive, set within a landscape of meandering footpaths and wild greenery that contrasts with the surrounding Manhattan skyline. The setting engages the senses and draws the visitor into deeper encounters with the individuals and their stories. By expanding the idea of portraiture at this scale, the installation becomes participatory, encouraging visitors to not only look and listen but also to pause, reflect, ask questions, and engage in conversation.
As part of the experience, interactive stations allow visitors to contribute their voices to a digital tapestry, constructing a time capsule and evolving portrait of the nation at this 250th anniversary milestone—a reminder that democracy is not given—it is made, together.
