Junípero Serra Media

A trio of media installations on the unifying theme of water, for a history museum that itself has a powerful history.

This landmark site has undergone many transformations over the centuries. Originally Native Kumeyaay territory, the site became the Colonial birthplace of California and San Diego in 1769 upon the Presidio's completion. In 1929 the San Diego Historical Society was established, and currently, the site is the San Diego History Center’s Junípero Serra Museum. The Serra Museum interpretation has been transformed to be more inclusive of different perspectives, utilizing the water cycle as narrative. Three poetic digital installations— Rain Tryptic, Watershed 360 Vista, and River Oculus Well— present the water cycle as “common ground” to divergent perspectives. The Watershed 360 Vista  allows visitors to see the City’s entire watershed from headwaters to Ocean. While the River Oculus Well  presents full-size vignettes of places along the River that many San Diego residents have never seen.
