Science City reveals the durable technologies and complex systems that make big cities work. Installed in Manhattan’s bustling Herald Square, Science City brought together scientists, writers, urban planners, and psychologists to interpret urban infrastructures: telescopes help passersby locate antennae while experiencing live radio and television transmissions. Periscopes show the depths of water mains, subway tunnels and electrical conduits underfoot. Animated displays installed in advertising kiosks explain the origins of the city’s water supply, and the physics of gridlock. Some exhibits explain how pixellated traffic signs operate, and the long journeys of our City’s garbage.
